Host x looks in the ARP table to find the MAC address of Host y by comparing it to its IP address. When Host x does not find a MAC address of Host y, Host x constructs an ARP request. The ARP request will contain the IP address of Host x. The packet is sent to Ethernet broadcast address where all devices in the network will receive it. Since Host x has sent both it MAC and IP addresses, all the host receiving the ARP request will add the entry into their ARP tables. Since Host y only has an IP address, it will create an ARP reply that contains its MAC and IP address and send it to Hst x that requested for it.
